Today in Science, we took an assessment on Simple Machines. There are 6 types of Simple Machines, and we explained how they help us do work.
Mrs. Class gave us a day off from our Word Study assessment. <3 In PE this week, we've been doing gymnastics. In Social Studies, we had an assessment on the 13 Colonies. In Library, we read a picture book about Horace Pippin. In Music, we had a free choice day! We're working on MCAS practice responses in Reading. We're writing body paragraphs of our Spark essays. In Math, we're learning how to multiply and divide fractions. We are having a Valentine's party today. Happy Valentine's Day! Next week is vacation!! The Clarke Middle School gave us a preview of their show "Willy Wonka."
We went on a scavenger hunt in science to make booklets about Simple Machines at Harrington. In science today, we colored our Simple Machines books and listened to music. We are almost ready to write essays about our Spark research. We started with topic sentences this week. In math, we are working on fractions in a context unit, finding fractions OF fractions (blacktop area of a playground). In Social Studies, we are about to have an assessment on 13 Colonies, so we were writing notes about them. Next week we'll be having our Valentine's celebration. In PE, we are learning about gymnastics. In Social Studies, we learned about settlements (such as Plymouth).
We read a book called The Invisible Boy, about not being a bystander. In math, we're working on adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. In reading, we are trying to find evidence to support our claim with Mrs. Moussa. One way to do that is use our Open Response Checklist. In writing, we are working on Spark research. In science, we are testing six different types of simple machines. We are almost finished testing these simple machines: inclined planes, levers, wheels & axles, pulleys, screws, and wedges. We are reading a book called Number the Stars. We had Aimsweb reading and writing testing this week. In PE, we are in the basketball unit. The cubbies are closed until further notice. HAWKS Council is planning a community service project, and is hoping to collect school supplies for schools in Zambia. HAWKS Council is also planning a school spirit day. This past week, we have not had any outdoor recess because of frigid temperatures! In Library, In science, we are learning about simple machines.
Today in Social Studies, we made a chart about early North American settlements. In writing, we started researching our Sparks, which are things that make us feel happy. In reading, we are learning how to write open responses for MCAS. We're learning about adding and subtracting fractions in math. We finished our Character Study Opinion Essays! We celebrated a few birthdays and half-birthdays. We're finishing and hanging up our Spark illustrations (what makes us happiest). Today is MI (Multiple Intelligences) Friday! We did a check-in, and most of us are feeling very happy today. Have a wonderful long weekend, everyone! We are going to have a holiday party later today!
We're almost done with our science, social studies, and reading units. We had a math assessment on Best Buys, Rates, and Ratios. We had a social studies assessment on Explorers. We made 5 posters in math to show our thinking about math problems. In writing, we are in our draft stage of our literary opinion essays. We have a book swap today! We are going to have a big clean-up before winter vacation starts. Mrs. Class' present to us is no word study assessment today! We started a new read aloud book this week, Number the Stars. In reading, we are still working on understanding nonfiction texts. The teachers are changing their switch subjects starting in January. Yesterday, we went to a concert at LHS to hear the choral and a cappella groups perform. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year! On Friday, 5C put their knowledge of electricity to the test. The wired a "house" and included both series and parallel circuits, as well as switches in their designs. Check out the work they did!
